Oracles of the Bush, in it's 14th year, is a four day cultural event held annually in March coinciding with Tenterfield's brilliant autumn.
Tenterfield's Oracles of the Bush is a celebration of Australian Bush culture through the use of theatre, bush poetry, literature, music and art. Performances by professional poets and balladeers, exhibitions, workshops and re-enactments of early Tenterfield based events captures the very essence of the Australian bush - the heart of the country.
Tenterfield’s Oracles of the Bush Committee finds inspiration for the district’s premier event in the spirit and character of the region’s people, places, history and scenic beauty. Each year the committee honours a worthy local person by naming them ‘Oracles of the Bush Local Legend’.
The Oracles of the Bush committee has announced Tenterfield’s Rhonda Rovera (pictured top right) as the 2010 Oracles of the Bush Legend. The theme for this year’s four-day festival from March 25-28 will be “A Caring Legend”, in keeping with the 2010 Year of the Girl Guide.
Over the years, Rhonda has worked quietly to assist many people in Tenterfield and has worked with groups from the girl guides to Junior Tennis and the Tenterfield Care Centre. She has also been part of the Sir Henry Parkes Festival, the Main Street Committee, Tenterfield Care Centre and Home Care, the CWA Evening Branch, the Wyoming Family Information Centre, the Tenterfield Golf Club Associates, and the St Vincent De Paul Society.
The Bush Legend acts as an ambassador for Tenterfield during the festival, which includes live performance of Australian Bush poetry, music and art. Oracles of the Bush program endeavours to reflect the struggles, humour, perseverance, passions, spirit of both pioneer and contemporary Australians. In addition Tenterfield's Oracles of the Bush supplies a platform to aspiring future performers both at senior and junior level through the Looming Legend competition.
Tenterfield Tourism Manager Patti Ainsworth said “The Oracles has become a popular event not only for bush poets and poetry lovers, but for all those who love the bush and all it represents,” Mrs Ainsworth said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to visit Tenterfield during the town’s spectacular autumn. Most people come back.” More...
